Peter M. Bednar, 74, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday afternoon, December 13, 2008, at Wilson Memorial Hospital.
Peter was predeceased by his parents, Peter and Mary (Mizerak) Bednar.
He is survived by three sons, Matt Bednar of Camillus, Col. Mark (Lisa) Bednar, U.S.A.F. of Fairfax, VA and Michael Bednar of Johnson City; his daughter, Marie Bednar of Virginia Beach, VA, three grandchildren, Christopher, Caroline and Mary Bednar of Fairfax, VA; and his uncle, Joseph (Alice) Mizerak of Endwell.
He was a graduate of Binghamton North High School and in 1958 graduated from Broome Community College with an Associate in Applied Science Degree in Electrical Technology. He was a former employee of Link Simulation and a retired marketing representative for the I.B.M. Corporation, Owego, after twenty-five years of service. He was a member of the V.F.W. Peter served in the US Army as a communications specialist. Assigned to the 307th Communications Reconnaissance Battalion he led a 10 man team that monitored E. German and Soviet radio transmissions. He received an honorable discharge with the rank of Sgt (T). He was Democratic Committee Chairperson for the Johnson City-51st District. He was a former Johnson City Village Trustee 1972-74. He was the Chairperson of the Johnson City Village Electrical Board for many years and a former treasurer of the Johnson City Boy Scout Troop #102.
He was a Roman Catholic and a long time parishioner of St. Stanislaus Kostka Church in Binghamton and later joined SS Cyril & Method Church.
Throughout his busy life he enjoyed fishing, photography, genealogy, home improvements and loved tinkering with his cars. He was an avid collector of movies and books, loved military history and frequently traveled to Hawaii for vacation.
Peter was the honorary marshal for the annual “Penguins in the Pocono’s” Golf Tournament.

Funeral Information

Funeral services will be held on Friday 9am at the Chopyak-Scheider Funeral Home, 326 Prospect Street, Binghamton, followed by a Funeral Mass will be offered on Friday at 9:30am at SS Cyril & Method Church 148 Clinton Street Binghamton Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday 2-4 and 7-9pm at the Chopyak-Scheider Funeral Home, 326 Prospect Street, Binghamton.
