John Kostun Jr., 80, passed away on Tuesday morning, November 18, 2008, at the Vestal Nursing Center after a long illness.
He was predeceased by his wife of 46 years, Xenia Kuharsky. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Mary Swartwood, and his special friend, Betty Haigh. He is survived by his son Sergius, and his wife Sandy Sawka of Binghamton, his daughter Kera Dalton, her husband Bill, and their children, Tatiana, Andrew and Alex, of Marblehead, MA. He is also survived by his aunt, Helen Kukeila, several brother and sisters-in-laws, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

John was an educator in the Binghamton Schools and the Binghamton Psychiatric Center for 30 years. He taught music at Vestal High School, East Junior High School, and North High School, then spent 18 years as a guidance counselor at Binghamton High School. He was most proud of his Junior High Festival Concerts, the students he helped receive a college education, and the College Information Day, which he expanded to service all the students of Broome County. John and his wife Xenia co-founded the Parents Association for the Hearing Impaired, whose children, along with John’s family and friends greatly enjoyed John’s accordion music.

Funeral Information

Funeral Services will be held Friday at 10am at St. Michael’s Greek Catholic Church, 292 Clinton Street, Binghamton, concelebrated by the Very Rev. Protopresbyter James Dutko and Very Rev. Sergius Kuharsky. Burial will be in St. Tikhon’s Monastery Cemetery. Father James Dutko will conduct a prayer service Thursday at 7:30pm at the Chopyak-Scheider Funeral Home, 326 Prospect Street, Binghamton, where the family will receive friends on Thursday from 2-4pm and 7-9pm.
