Mr. Peter YonchukJune 22, 1919 - November 19, 2009 Peter Yonchuk of Kirkwood
Peter Yonchuk 90 passed away on Thursday, November 19, 2009, at Wilson Hospital after a short, courageous battle with his final illness. Peter was predeceased by his wife; Dorothy, his parents; Anna and George and his brothers and sisters-in-laws; John Sr. (Agnes), Walter (Evelyn), Alexander (Florence) and George and Viola Kuruc, his nephew; Michael Kuruc Sr. and his grand nephew; Peter II. His is survived by his daughters; Diane and Linda, both of Kirkwood, and the many nieces and nephews of the Yonchuk, Brady, Kuruc, Fazio, Kopyar and Barrett families, as well as many friends, particularly his fishing buddies. Peter was born and brought up in Sebastapol (Pittston) Pennsylvania where he excelled in football, basketball and baseball, earning several scholarship offers. His family moved to the Binghamton area in 1934, where Peter spent the next forty years as a dairy farmer while also working for over thirty years, as a heavy equipment operator and snow plow driver for the Town of Kirkwood Highway Department. He was also a lifetime member of the Five Mile Point Volunteer Fire Company for which he spent endless summer nights operating a concession stand at the Five Mile Point Speedway. His passions were bowling, fishing and sports, especially Windsor basketball and baseball… hundreds of Windsor athletes will remember Pete in the stands cheering them on! The family would like to thank the staff of Wilson South Tower 5 for the excellent, compassionate care Peter and his daughters received this week. The family also cannot begin to thank the staff at Vestal Nursing Center, especially Willow Ridge West for the care and kindness Peter received for the past 2 ½ years Peter had a second family there! Funeral InformationA Funeral Service will be at 10am Tuesday, November 24th at the Chopyak-Scheider Funeral Home, 326 Prospect Street, Binghamton with Rev. Ilya Gotlinsky officiating. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated by Father Thomas Catucci at 1pm on Tuesday, November 24th, at St. Mary’s Church of Kirkwood, NYS Route 11. The family will receive friends Monday, November 23rd from 4-7pm at the Chopyak-Scheider Funeral Home, 326 Prospect Street, Binghamton . Donations InformationThose wishing to do so are invited to make donations in Peter’s memory to the Five Mile Point Fire Company, Crescent Drive, in Kirkwood or the Windsor Boys’ Varsity Club Scholarship Fund, c/o the Windsor Central School District.
